Riverhead Democratic Committee Responds to DSA Endorsement of Local Candidate
July 10.2025
The Riverhead Democratic Committee’s statement to questions surrounding an endorsed Democratic candidate’s decision to accept an endorsement from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a national political organization whose platform diverges from the values of the local Democratic Party.
While the Riverhead Democratic Committee supports a diversity of perspectives within the party and encourages spirited discussion around local issues, the decision to seek or accept endorsements from outside ideological groups—particularly without consultation with Democratic leadership—raises concerns about unity, trust, and transparency.
The Riverhead Democratic Committee endorsed this candidate, Kevin Shea, based on their stated commitment to serve the people of Riverhead and to advocate for responsible governance, affordability, and environmental stewardship, The decision to accept the DSA endorsement was made independently and without support or input from the local party. It does not reflect the Committee’s direction or approach.
The Committee emphasized that its mission remains clear: electing candidates who will deliver results for the working families, small business owners, and longtime residents of Riverhead. Priorities such as managing growth responsibly, preserving open space and farmland, and maintaining the quality of life for Riverhead residents are at the forefront of the Committee’s work.
Our Democratic values are rooted in community engagement, effective leadership, and commitment to local needs. We do not believe national ideological agendas, whether from the far right or far left—should dictate the future of Riverhead.
The Committee also reaffirmed its commitment to keeping voters informed and involved in the electoral process. We encourage residents to reach out, ask questions, and learn more about each candidate’s positions.
As a party, we remain focused on representing the people of Riverhead—not outside organizations. We will continue working to elect candidates who understand our town and are accountable to our voters.

Jerry Halpin
Riverhead Supervisor
I want to protect our young adults, working families and seniors from being taxed off Long Island by creating a stable budget that is not dependent on the over taxation of residents. Throughout my 30 years as a pastor and nonprofit entrepreneurial leader, I have thrived on challenges, re-thinking, retooling and reimagining how to make the most out of the resources available. I believe in creating avenues that foster community dialogue that are solution driven for everyone. I have made a career of helping people and organizations through common sense leadership and financial stability. With your vote, I will do the same for our amazing town.
Mark Woolley
Town Council
I have a deep understanding of Riverhead's critical issues. My advocacy in safeguarding our groundwater and open space, coupled with my dedication to supporting our farming community, demonstrates a clear vision for sustainable growth. During my time in the Federal and State government, I helped to secure vital resources to improve the lives of working families across the region. I bring much-needed experience at a time when it's sorely needed to provide access to constituent services, to protect our community from unchecked overdevelopment, and to stand up for what is right for all town residents, not just the politically-connected.

Kevin Shea
Town Council
I am a long time Riverhead resident and life-long Long Islander. I am also a third generation FDNY firefighter, now retired due to my critical injuries sustained on 9/11. Responding to the call I grabbed my tools and eagerly ran to the horrific disaster to protect lives and property. Since then, I have fully recovered, I built my home and gardens here in Riverhead; embraced by this community. I am running because our Town is facing its own threats from overdevelopment and affordability. I am running again with the same urgency, to fight to prevent harm and protect the lives and properties of my local community. I won't do this alone. Will you join me?
